40 miles in the “Sahara”

Brian and I went for a 40 mile bike ride on Sunday. It was labeled easy in the Backroad Bicycling in the Finger Lakes Region book. This is the longest I’ve ever ridden in one day but we would have been fine if it hadn’t been 93 degrees with high humidity. The ride was up along Lake Ontario. The other reason I chose this route was that I was thinking it would be cooler by the lake–but it wasn’t.

We started around 8:30am in Sodus Point, then pedaled to Sodus, through Williamson, to Ontario, and then down to Lake road and back through Pulteneyville to Sodus Point. Once we got onto Lake road things were starting to get really really hot.

But really the first 30 miles were pleasant and fun and not too hard. We were starting to get a little tired and stopped for lunch at the Pulteneyville Pickle, where we waited at least 40 minutes for a peanut chicken pizza that we devoured in 5.

The last 10 miles were very very hard. The road was popping like bubble wrap under my tires it was so hot. I drank at least 4 liters of water during the trip but by then I think I was still getting dehydrated. My body is used to sitting in an airconditioned office most of the time & isn’t used to this kind of basic challenge.

When we made it back to Sodus Point we got cold drinks at the hot dog stand and sat in the shade and thought about going swimming but couldn’t face going back out into the sun to get to the beach… so we went home and sat in the pool in the exercise room and watched Strangers With Candy.

After that I only had enough strength left to order another pizza and sit and read for the rest of the day.

I know I’m a wimp. We did it though.
